With the Centre bent on implementing the Aadhaar scheme as quickly as possible, more and more anomalies and instances of negligence are being reported. Close on the heels of a vendor being caught in Bhilwara for attempting to take an Aadhaar card in the name of slain al-Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden, a stranger incident has come to light from a Pokhran village in Jaisalmer district.
As per Aadhaar records, over 250 people from one village have been born on January 1, raising allegations of carelessness and `cheating' by e-Mitra centres which initially records the data. The government staff at these centres has been accused of gross negligence by villagers of Pabupadia, among others, who raised the matter with authorities.
Almost all people from this village, whether young or old, have their dates of birth as January 1 on their Aadhaar cards. “This has happended due to the carelessness of e-Mitra managers. When this was brought to their notice, forget taking action, the officers did not even discuss the issue,“ said a villager.
Pabupadia comes under Didania gram panchayat.
Pokhran SDO Mool Singh Rajawat confessed that he had received complaints in this regard. Generally, if you do not fill the date of birth column, the date is recorded as January 1. Later, corrections are made based on information and supporting documents. The population of Pabupadia village is around 250 and many have settled in Pokhran. Other than this village, similar complaints have been raised by villagers of Manasar gram panchayat and Bhurjagarh. According to sources, the problem is a result of the government subletting the making of Aadhaar cards to unscrupulous contractors, who are trying to churn out maximum number of cards for profits. The adding of names or changing an entry in the Aadhaar card has also become profitable as Rs 100 can charged per entry or for making a change. So, the villagers allege that these mistakes are being committed deliberately to make money .
Pokhran SDO Mool Singh Rajawat confessed that he had received complaints in this regard. The matter is now being investigated.
