Citizens opposing the Aadhaar programme told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was seeding bank accounts with the unique number, according to a report by The Economic Times.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, who was representing a group of activists opposing the Aadhaar programme, accused the UIDAI of ‘resorting to inorganic seeding’, the report suggests.

Citing instances where people who had never consented to linking bank accounts with Aadhaar, had received messages from their banks that their accounts had been linked, Divan told the top court, “Suppose you link your Aadhaar with your pension, it gets automatically linked to your bank account.”

Divan requested the court to rule in favour of the people by making Aadhaar optional adding that the court should make sure children, HIV affected, bonded labourers, trafficked women and vulnerable sections are not denied their basic right to food and health care.
