1217 - 21L UIDs generated in Mysore and Tumkur districts

MYSORE: The Mysore and Tumkur districts could be setting a record in allotment of unique identification number  (UID).

Of the 31 lakh UIDs generated in the nation, Mysore and Tumkur account for 21 lakh. Launched on October 8 last year in Mysore, the ambitious project aims to cover 29 lakh residents in the district by June-end, while 50% target is already met.

M N Vidyashankar, e-governance  principal secretary, on Monday said Karnataka accounts for over 21 lakh UIDs in India , which is some 68% of the total. "The project is on in 16 states and we are ahead. Mysore could well become the first district in the nation where all the residents are enrolled to get Aadhar," he said at a day-long workshop for elected representatives. The e-governance department is seeking to enlist support of the elected representatives from ground level to speed up the process, given that some 15 lakh have registered for the UID in the district. After June, the officials are planning to expand the project to other districts.

Presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries and Panchayat development officers (PDOs) attended the meet. Seeking their support, he said: "If you concentrate, Mysore could well be the first district in the nation to have covered the entire population."

He also allayed fears among a section of the society about the Aadhar saying it is to extend benefits to the public and not to harass them. The UID will become a basis for some essential services in future. "Even to open a bank account people will need UID," he said, calling upon people to enrol. E-governance director C S Ravindran made a power-point presentation on Aadhar.
