2040 - AADHAR, A FARCICAL DOCUMENT? - Star of Mysore

Not honoured at RTOs
Mysore, Dec. 3- The Union Government's much-hyped unique identification card Aadhar seems to have no recognition and value at the Regional Transport office (RTO) here.

However, the Union Government clearly says that Aadhar is a vital document to obtain any government facility and the State Government too upholds that as a valid proof of identity and address. The Transport Commissioner, in a communique issued on Sept. 24, is learnt ot have instructed the officers of RTOs to accept Aadhar from people seeking driving licence, registration of vehicles and related services.

The public have complained that despite clear instructions from the Transport Commissioner, Aadhar was not accepted as proof of identity and address at RTOs and the officers there were said to be insisting on alternative documents like

Voters ID Card, Ration Card, SSLC Marks Card and such. They questioned the rationale behind the introduction of Aadhar when that was not recognised by the government departments themselves.

It is also being heard that Aadhar is acceptable for obtaining LIC policies, ration cards and affidavits from Notary and ironically not honoured at RTOs.

RTO clarifies
RTO (West) Siddappa Kallera, clarifying over the issue with SOM yesterday, said "Aadhar card does not indicate the date of birth of the person and hence cannot be honoured as a proof of age.

Hence to obtain driving licence and registration of vehicles people have to submit alternative documents in support of the applicant's age and address."
