Chennai: Aadhar enrolment drive by a private bank here has created suspicion among some people who fear that their personal details provided for Aadhar registration may be shared for the bank’s marketing database.
In a recent press release, the Chennai corporation asked people in Adyar, Alwarpet and Mylapore to avail facilities provided at three branches of a private bank for biometric enrolment for Aadhar registration.
A resident noted that Aadhar registrations were usually carried out on the premises of educational institutions. “We are asked to provide all our personal information in the premises of a private bank. I worry that they will misuse the information,” he said.
Another person who came for registration said the information was being collected by a private agency, not by bank officials. A bank official said they had given space for Aadhar work with good intentions. He clarified that the bank was not involved in any data collection work.
M.R.V. Krishna Rao, joint director, Directorate of Census Operations, TN, said the information provided by people was completely secure. “The venue for biometric enrolment is jointly decided by the corporation and NPR (National Population Registry) with even private schools are used,” he told DC.
The corporation asked people to bring the acknowledgement slip issued during the NPR house listing census held in 2010 and approach the following venues for biometric enrolment: ICICI banks in Alwarpet, Adyar and Mylapore, Pragadeeswara Apartments, 50, I Main Road in CIT Nagar and 28/62, and Jeenis Road, opposite Saidapet post office.
