Pune: About 41% LPG consumers in the city and rural parts of the district have linked their Aadhaar cards to their bank accounts. The process is necessary for direct transfer of LPG subsidy to customers' accounts. The government is set to roll out the direct transfer facility in the district from January 1.

Seeing the poor response to the registration process so far, the district administration has urged consumers to contact their banks and gas agencies at the earliest. Though they have a grace period of three months, consumers have been asked to submit details in advance to avoid last-minute rush.

The scheme is aimed at restricting black-marketing and illegal supply of LPG cylinders.

District collector Saurabh Rao said, "We have instructed the gas agencies to explain the people how the scheme works. Though the scheme will be launched on January 1, the work of collecting details will continue. Consumers have three more three months to submit their details."

Pune district has about 25 lakh consumers, of which 10.44 lakh consumers have linked their Aadhaar numbers with banks and gas agencies.

Meanwhile, consumers lined up at gas agencies on Tuesday to submit their documents. A distributor stressed on the need for filling the forms correctly to avoid rejection. The form is simple and self-explanatory. Every applicant should carry a cancelled cheque, bearing IFSC code of the bank. Customers will purchase cylinders at market rate and the subsidy amount will be transferred to their bank accounts.
