Kolhapur: A 23-year-old youngster on Tuesday was found murdered near a stream at Aamrai Road in Ichalkaranji.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjeevkumar alias Shubham Chandrakant Thombare. He was a resident of Ichalkaranji near Sakharpe Hospital. The incident was reported with the Ichalkaranji police station.
A police official said the body was noticed lying near the stream, after which a witness passed on the information to the police.
"On examining the body, we found his Aadhaar card from his trouser pocket. This helped us identify the body. Following the address on the Aadhaar card, we called his mother. She identified the body," a police officer investigating the case, said.
On Monday night, Sanjeevkumar had gone for duty but did not return home the next day. Finding his absence suspicious, his family members registered a missing person's complaint with the police station.
Sanjeevkumar had been studying in an engineering college, but had to discontinue studies last year following his mother's illness. He worked in a private company in Ichalkaranji to sustain his family, the police said.
The police also recovered a note in the pocket of the deceased, which stated, "I am committing suicide on my own will and nobody should be held responsible for it." The police, however, doubt this as circumstances indicate that it was a murder.
"There are scratch marks on the body. This suggests that someone may have quarreled with the deceased and thrown him into the stream. There are also some deep wounds on the head and other parts of the body, showing that he may have been attacked with weapons. We are gathering more details as to whether he had a rivalry with someone or had quarreled with anyone before his murder," the investigating officer said.
