CPI (M) activists on Sunday staged a dharna on Besant Road protesting the government’s proposal to link Aadhaar cards with subsidised LPG cylinder supply.

Addressing the gathering, CPI (M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao said, “The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the BJP had opposed the cash transfer scheme (CTS) introduced by the UPA government. Now, the State government has gone back on its word by planning to implement CTS and link LPG supply with Aadhaar cards.”

Consumers had to shell out Rs. 1,400 per cylinder when CTS was in force during the UPA rule, and they have not got the subsidy benefit till date, he pointed out.

The government’s decisions are aimed at helping corporates and MNCs. Deregulating diesel prices will pave way for private diesel outlets, besides pushing up prices of essential commodities, he felt.
